Liebe Freunde

Dear friends
For us the year 2018 began again in Adelboden, this time with more snow than the previous years. We enjoyed the wonderful skiruns not anly in Adelboden but also a couple of times in Grindelwald.

A more impressive scenery for skiing than mounts Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is hardly imaginable. Of course we also tried our luck on the Lauberhorn downhill race track which we mastered well, but not quite with the same speed as some other well known skiers do it. Towards the end of winter Christian, my motorcycle buddy, came to visit us in Adelboden and together we enjoyed a couple of very pleasant days on the skis.

In May Bob, my friend from my days in South Africa, who now lives in Scotland, came to stay with us for almost a week. A visit to the Swiss Museum of Transport and the ascent of the Great Mythen was only excelled by our trip to the Jungfraujoch. With wonderful and warm weather we enjoyed the impressive view on 3466 m altitude together with a perceived million visitors from Asia and India.

On Top of Europe |
The destination of this year’s motorcycle trip was the Carpathian mountains Rumania. We left home on June 21 heading for Northern Italy. Even before we reached the Rumanian border we could enjoy the fantastic scenery and roads of the Dolomites, Slovenia, Austria and Hungary; and also the way back through Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Austria provided gorgeous roads again. In Rumania we first of all looked for curvy roads through the hills thus avoiding all the touristic hotspots. Our main goal was to cross the Southern Carpathians on their best known roads such as the Transalpina and the Transfăgărășan.

The roads through the Carpathians wind in uncountable bends through long valleys towards their highest points. The full length of the “Transalpina” with the Tărtărău-Pass on 1678 m asl measures 148 km, and the “Transfăgărășan” with the Bâlea-Tunnel on 2042 m asl extends to 151 km: Corners, bends and curves and very little traffic, what do you want more, when you sit on a motorbike. Most nights we spent in small guesthouses where we experienced the remarkable hospitality and friendliness of the Rumanian people.
Beginning of July Marlies and her sister Sonja visited Dominik, Sonja’s son, and his girlfriend Anna in Scotland. They toured through the Western regions of the country and especially explored the Isle of Mull.

The bench |
Mid July we were Ueli and Elsbeth’s, my cousin's, guest. This gave us the opportunity to admire their wooden bench which they got as a present on their golden wedding day, and which is placed on the Flums Mountains.
The extraordinary sunny and warm weather we had in Switzerland this year really made it unnecessary to travel far away to find the sun. So we spent a lot of time hiking and Marlies managed to swim dozens of kilometres in Olten’s public swimming pool.

During last winter I reactivated a former hobby of mine: ham radio. My last activities on this subject reach back to the 1980s, but I have kept my licence ever since. Because of internet and mobile phones ham radio certainly isn’t as popular as it used to be 30 years ago. But I was positively surprised when I realised that there are still a lot of people – also younger ones – enthusiastically pursuing this hobby today. I was particularly intrigued by the combination of ham radio and hiking, which is being practised worldwide by a community of radio amateurs under the term of SOTA (summits on the air). Therefore, after the acquisition of a portable shortwave transceiver and the construction of a couple of light weight antennas, I climbed quite a number of designated SOTA summits from where I managed numerous interesting radio contacts with stations all over Europe.

Besides making many new like-minded friends I also got to know many summits and hiking areas which I otherwise wouldn’t have visited.

For this year’s annual hiking days with Eugen and Jean-François we stayed in Meiringen. Our main destination was the Gauli hut. The Gauli glacier which lies another hour’s hike further up made it to the headlines again this year, because due to the melting glaciers parts of the American DC3 which crashed there in 1946 were released by the ice.

And a few days later, on September 17, I visited the same area again. This time however I had the opportunity to fly there in a Diamond Katana 2-seater airplane with my nephew Roger as pilot. It was a most impressive experience for me to be able to see this fascinating landscape made of the glaciers of the Bernese Alps from above.

In fall Marlies finally was able to take some vacation from work. We spent a week in the Dolomites and Meran, then a week in Obertschappina, where we could stay in my brother’s house, and the last one of the three weeks we spent in Adelboden. From my motorcycle trips I knew a small hotel at the Lago di Misurina close to the “Tre Cime di Lavaredo” mountains, one of the most popular and famous area of the Dolomites. From there we went for some wonderful and partly quite challenging hikes, including of course the one along the trails around the awesome “Three Peaks”.

In Obertschappina we enjoyed the tranquillity of the mountain area, and on a few easy hikes we explored the surroundings on foot. In Adelboden the window shutters of our flat needed a new coat of paint. So we spent one day painting the shutters and of course another one ascending mount “Bonderspitz”, one of Adelbodens most popular peaks.
A date which created some mixed feelings was November 20. Olten that day was completely covered in the fog. We found the sun on the Napf mountain where we enjoyed marvellous views of the snow-clad winter landscapes.

It's the way it looks ... |
Now we look forward to the festive season and the winter. We already had the first serious snow here in Olten, but the whole splendor has melted away in the meantime. After Christmas we will again stay in Adelboden hoping to find lots of snow and only few people on the ski slopes there.
Take care and stay well.
